Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion

Francis Bacon was born in 1909 to English parents living in Dublin.
He left home at 17,  his parents refusing to accept his homosexuality. The artist known for his bold, grotesque, emotionally charged and raw imagery, took up painting in his early 20's,  but painted only sporadically until his mid-30's. He then drifted through life as an interior decorator and designer of furniture, rugs and bathroom tiles in modern, Art Deco-influenced style.

His breakthrough came with the 1944 triptych Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion, which in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War, sealed his reputation as a uniquely bleak chronicler of the human condition. His painterly abstracted figures are typically isolated in glass or steel geometrical cages, set against flat, nondescript backgrounds.

His post World War II paintings, in which he represented the human face and figure in an expressive, often grotesque style, suggest alienation, violence and suffering.

Bacon's provocative, expressive work is considered some of the
most important art of the postwar era. His painterly abstracted figures are typically isolated in glass or steel geometrical cages, set against flat, nondescript backgrounds.

Bacon  died in Madrid, Spain, on October 28th , 1992.
