Jackson Pollock was born on the 28th of January
Jackson Pollock (1912 -1956), was born in Cody, Wyoming. He was an American painter and a major figure of the abstract expressionist movement who during his lifetime, revolutionized the world of Modern Art with his unique abstract painting techniques.
Pollock explored abstract expressionism via his splatter and action pieces, which involved pouring paint and other media directly onto canvases laid on the floor. Pollock's most famous paintings were made during this "dripping'' period between 1947 and 1950.
In 1930, at age 18, Pollock moved to New York City to live with his brother Charles. He soon began studying with painter Thomas Hart Benton, Charles's art teacher.
During the Great Depression, Roosevelt created the ''Works Progress Administration'' as part of the New Deal Art Project, as a measure to employ artists. Pollock and brother Charles found work with the ''Public Works of Art Project'', in the mural division
During his lifetime, Pollock enjoyed considerable fame and notoriety; he was a major artist of his generation. Regarded as reclusive, he had a volatile personality, and struggled with alcoholism for most of his life.
In 1941, Peggy Guggenheim began expressing interest in Pollock's paintings and she immediately put him under contract. Peggy" Guggenheim ( 1898 – 1979) was an American Art collector. She created a noted art collection in Europe and America primarily between 1938 and 1946.
Pollock became wildly popular after being featured in a four-page spread, on August 8, 1949, in Life magazine. The article asked of Pollock, "Is he the greatest living painter in the United States?" The Life article changed Pollock's life overnight.
This reconnaissance, a little after the Second World War II, coincided with the emergence of New York as the new World capital of Culture
On August 11, 1956, at the age of 44, while driving under the influence of alcohol, Pollock drove his 1950 Oldsmobile 88 convertible, off the road and into a tree, killing himself and a passenger, and injuring another.
